The X-ray machine that could see inside the body was a sensation. Doctors who were rich enough bought and operated machines at every opportunity. They took them to parties.  It was fun! The high voltage needed to operate the tube was tested with a spark gap. The machine sparked, crackled, smelt of ozone, and exposed the unthinkable. Following the death and illness of many early workers it was finally realized that even small doses of X-rays are harmful, but it took many years to finally remove all machines from public access. |
