Ice pillar (spike) |
||
As water freezes in very cold conditions, the surface may become covered in straight edged (hexagonal) ice plates, that for a short time leave one or more small triangular holes. As freezing continues, the thickening ice under the surface forces water up through the hole. This water freezes around the edge, forming a hollow tube that eventually becomes a solid pillar. The editor remembers seeing ice pillars on a bowl of solid ice many years ago, on a very cold winter morning, in the South Island of NZ.
