| The average estimate of apparent depth by different people is 38 cm. The tank is 50 cm long. Dividing 38 into 50 gives the refractive index of water as approximately 1.32. Direct estimates using only binocular vision are approximate but on average they give the correct apparent depth. The method of no parallax described in Example 2 gives improved accuracy. |
