A short circuit is a direct low resistance connection across a power supply. For example: the terminals of a 10 volt DC power supply is connected across a low resistance graphite rod.  |
| Short circuits in high current electrical systems are dangerous because they may start fires. All power supplies, household appliances, cars etc. are protected with fuses that melt (blow) and break the circuit when more than a given current is drawn. |
