QUESAR (Quasi stellar object)

Quesars are one of the best known astonishing surprises that are found whenever we make a bigger telescope. They are objects that....

1 Appear to be at cosmological distances because they have very large red shifts.

2 Appear, because of their apparent distance, to shine with the light of an entire galaxy.

3 Appear to be of very small dimensions (less than the radius of the solar system) because they show variations in intensity over a period of a few hours.

What exactly a quesar is thought to be, depends on one's theory of how the universe came to be.

The much larger Hubble replacement with an eight meter mirror that is due to be launched in 2015? may shed some light on the puzzle. What ever happens, expect the discovery at least one more class of equally strange objects.
