Newton's Rules [laws] |
Newton (1643 to 1727) summarized his findings and the knowledge of the time in Latin, in a difficult, hand-written, hand-set book, published in 1686 - still called simply The Principia. The Royal Society had no money because they had lost heavily the year before, publishing The History of Fishes. The Principia was paid for by Halley, (of Halley's comet fame), who was a friend of Newton's. In simplified modern form: 1 A body will remain at rest ,or in uniform motion in a straight line, unless acted upon by a force. 2 The net unbalanced force f acting on an object of mass m is given by the product of mass in kilograms, times the acceleration a in meters per second per second. 3 Action and reaction are equal and opposite. |
