Inferior mirage |
![]() |
The common inferior mirage is caused by a layer of lower refractive index (warm air) above a road, airport tarmac, or the sea, etc., on a sunny day. There is no water on the road. What appears to be water collected in depressions is a total internal reflection of the sky etc. in layers of different refractive index above the road). Photo: Jacobs > More |
