Mass spectrometer

The working principle is very simple. A charged atom or molecule is injected into an evacuated chamber with a speed v. The ion is forced to move in a circular path in a uniform magnetic field and hits a detector.

The radius of the path is determined by the mass of the ion [the field, charge and speed being the same]. The mass of two ions can be compared with remarkable accuracy.
