Infrared light source

The most convenient and intense infrared light source is an array of infrared LED's (shown actual size). The radiation is of one particular wavelength in the near infrared.

Single infrared emitting LED's are used in remote control devices for televisions etc. and IR solid state lasers provide the signals that transmit internet and telephone data over optical cables.

Note: a thermal black-body source of infrared radiation has a wide wavelength range and low overall intensity of emission.
