Current in two identical coils (in the same sense),
separated by their radius give an almost uniform magnetic field
between them. Used by Helmholtz, the coils provide a simple solution
to obtaining a uniform field over a large area.
Teltron tube
Helmholtz coils set up a uniform field towards
the reader. The field strength between the coils can be measured
with a Hall probe.
