g-meters (accelerometers) |
|
Car makers look for new ways to attract customers. Boys who like fast cars like instruments so they can brag about their fast cars. Accelerometers calibrated in g's are becoming more popular. The clip shows a lateral-g accelerometer in operation as a driver races down a gravel road. The car is 'pulling one g' in the corners - which he claims is not bad for driving on gravel. Notice the direction of the centripetal acceleration in left and right hand corners. Cars will 'pull' up to 2.5 g's in corners on a hard dry race track. Roller coasters 'pull' no more than 4 g's. A toboggan rider in a louge may experience up to 6.5 g's in the lower corners. |
