Entropy (disorder) |
||
A natural process is something that happens over time without the input of energy from an external source. Salt dissolves in water, fruit rots, ice melts, heat flows from a warm person to a cold person in the same sleeping bag, rooms become untidy, cords get tangled. Each natural process increases disorder in some way. An increase in disorder is called an increase in entropy. To reduce entropy means to increase order. A reduction in entropy requires an external source of energy (or a maid). The principle is known as the second law of thermodynamics.
Chaos increases naturally (by itself). |
