Diffraction of ripples around a barrier

The wave propagation behind the wall is called diffraction.

Following Huygens ... points on a barrier act as the source of new waves. Waves radiate from the end of the wall leading to wave activity in the shadow region and to the formation of nodal lines just outside the shadow edge (not shown).
