Density (r) is mass over volume, in kg/m3. The plastic chips on the left have almost the same density as the liquid (water). They remain suspended for minutes and follow convection currents in the water due to gentle heating from below with a 40 Watt light bulb. The paraffin on the right has a greater expansion coefficient than water. Above 36°C the paraffin floats. Surface tension creates suspended spheres of paraffin. |
