Cosmology is the point were Physics crosses the boundary to become religion. Cosmology is largely speculative - asking the unanswerable - "Where did we come from", and "How is it that we are here". Over time there is progress, and the evolution of ideas. The notion of the 'Firmament of Heaven' has by degrees, been translated into a view of the universe that is vast beyond imagination, and strange beyond belief. The early 21st Century Western fashion is the Big Bang theory, that has a singularity that suddenly, spontaneously, before a moment in time, gave rise to time and to everything, in an expansion of space itself that is still taking place. Improbable as this sounds, grown men say they not only believe it, but they have evidence of it |

One thing is known - every time a bigger telescope is made, it becomes apparent that were seeing only part of the picture. Old ideas are found to have been mistaken, even on something as simple and fundamental as the age of the universe. There is no reason to suppose that that happy state of affairs is about to change any time soon. The successor to Hubble, with an eight meter mirror, is awaited with interest! |
