Change of state

Boiling, freezing and sublimation are changes of state that take place 'suddenly' at particular temperatures and pressures.

Equally sudden changes of state between different crystalline forms of a solid (eg. quartz), are referred to as phase changes. Sudden phase changes in subduction zones ~ 400 km below the surface, are responsible for deep earthquakes.
