Cerenkov radiation

Cerenkov radiation is seen when thermal power station fuel rods are immersed in water. The radiation is due to fast electrons (produced by gamma rays) traveling with speed v, faster than the speed of light in the water, c'. The wavelength range of the faint blue-violet emission is independent of the liquid. The half-angle of the electromagnetic shock-wave cone, a, is given by....

sina = c'/v
