Listen carefully to the sound of the bell. The pitch is constant but the sound rises and falls in loudness. The effect is known as a beat. The bell is a little thicker in places. It vibrates with two closely spaced frequencies. The human ear interprests the sound as being of a single frequency which varies in loudness as the two frequencies move in and put of phase. |
