To amplify is to employ a small signal to impose variations on a larger flow etc. The 100 Milliwatt output of an iPod is coupled to 100 Watt speakers via an amplifier and power supply.  |
| Fifty years ago the small changing voltage on the grid of a vacuum triode imposed variations on a large cathode-anode current. Nowdays the changing hole flow to the base from the emitter of a transistor imposes variations in the base-collector current. In both systems the power in the output circuit is increased. |
