Amplify

To amplify is to employ a small signal to impose variations on a larger flow etc. The 100 Milliwatt output of an iPod is coupled to 100 Watt speakers via an amplifier and power supply.

Fifty years ago the small changing voltage on the grid of a vacuum triode imposed variations on a large cathode-anode current. Nowdays the changing hole flow to the base from the emitter of a transistor imposes variations in the base-collector current. In both systems the power in the output circuit is increased.
