Isotopes

Different isotopes of the same element have different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus and hence have different masses, The separation of isotopes is a difficult process because the chemistry is the same. They differ only in mass.

The enrichment of naturally occurring uranium which contains only a small amount of fissionable 235U in gas centrifuges is the subject of ongoing fear and political debate.

An Applet shows the known isotopes of the light elements, their half lives, the energy released in the decay process, and the decay products.
