The two coefficients of friction

A normal force, (N), is a reaction force. At right, the normal force (N) is equal and opposite to mg, the weight of the car. The friction force between the rubber and the road is given by ... f = mN ... where m is a constant.

Static friction

The coefficient of static friction, ms, is the ratio of the friction force f, to the normal force N, just before wheel-spin begins.

f = msN

Kinetic friction

The coefficient of kinetic friction, mk, is the ratio of the friction force f, to the normal force N, once wheel-spin has been established.

f = mkN
