The communication satellite orbit

Space junk diagram. The ring is the orbit of communication satellites, above the equator, with a period of 24 hours. The radius of the orbit is 4.2x107 m, (~6.6 Earth radii). All communication satellites appear from the ground to be stationary, and above the equator. In the northern hemisphere all satellite dishes point somewhat south.

Arthur C Clarke (the science and a science fiction writer), is credited with first proposing the communications satellite idea.
