Dead Water

A ship which sinks low enough into the water creates an internal bow wave that moves ahead very slowly. The boat surfs on this internal wave and slows down. The effect may be dramatic when a power boat enters an estuary or slow flowing river from the open sea. The boat appears to wallow in the water and come to a complete halt.
