Long lived lightning channels are sometimes seen to break up into a series of 'beads'. The five frame clip at 25 frames per second shows the effect. (The clip has been enhanced frame by frame.) More usual lightning flashes appear on only one frame of a 25 frame per second movie. The mechanism is not understood, but the effect has been observed on many occasions.
