The effect is similar to the light circles sometimes seen to surround a light source photographed through randomly oriented twigs. There are several splendid examples on the web. The colors in the pattern are due to interference between light scattered from different parts of a single scratch. The same colors are seen occasionally in spider webs due to interference as light is scattered as it passes through the bunched fibers of a single spider web. |
