Course Description
The course is designed to introduce physics and chemistry at a level and pace that will challenge grade nine students. Laboratory work is a very important part of the study of each discipline.
Physics topics include: energy, force and motion, work, simple machines, electric current, voltage and power.
Basic scientific investigation techniques are taught with computer assisted data collection and analysis.
Chemistry topics include: atomic theory, the periodic table, chemical reactions and equations, acids, bases and salts, redox reactions and the electrochemical series.
Learner Outcomes
Students in Grade 9 Physics/Chemistry will:
- Study a range of topics in chemistry and physics
- be assigned readings from their text, CD, and other materials
- keep a well organized record of laboratory activities.
- develop visual means of explaining some of the concepts studied.
- occasionally plan and develop their own laboratory procedures
- follow safe laboratory practices at all times.
General Information (Texts/Materials/Software)
The following will be assessed:
- Written laboratory reports.
- Reading assignments and review questions.
- Tests and Quizzes.
- The ability to follow course expectations.
- Assigned projects and a written, end of semester, examination.
Weighting
- Lab reports, projects, group work, homework 60%
- Tests and quizzes 25%
- Final semester examination 15%
Course Expectations
- Listen.
- Respect yourself, your peers, your teacher.
- Come prepared to participate in learning.
- Be organized and have all necessary materials ready each day.
- Follow established laboratory safety rules and respect the laboratory environment.
- Accept responsibly for your learning.
Classroom Procedure
Students are responsible for any missed work and or assignments due to absence. It is your responsibility to see the teacher to set a completion date.
Unexcused late work will lose marks.
Students are encouraged to seek extra help or laboratory time whenever they feel extra help would be useful.
Extra help sessions may be assigned during flex time at the discretion of the teacher.
If you are having problems with any aspect of this course, please see your teacher immediately. Your teacher is happy to help you.
Reporting
"Grade to Date" information may be requested by students/parents at any time and will be poseted on K12 Planet as appropriate. Official "Grade to Date Reports" will be distributed every 6 weeks. The Cumulative Semester Grade for this course will appear on the official transcript.
